The Long Beach job market is in a fragile state, like much of the rest of the country. For those who are looking for a job, there are plenty of limitations out there. However, recent news about the shipping industry may be even more alarming to those looking for a job in this or a supporting industry. What is there to be worried about?
According to reports, the volume of cargo being shipped into and out of the twin ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles is significantly down compared to previous years. The 2011 numbers are lower, experts say, because there are more shippers who are using other hubs that are less expensive. Many are using Singapore and India ports as their hub destinations for those shipping to the East Coast. In fact, trade is moving to other areas of the country, including to New Jersey, New York and into the Savannah harbor.
